An Interview to Which You MUST Listen
In case you haven’t heard, celebrity Heath Ledger passed away this week. Well, everybody’s favorite church (sorry, I didn’t want to link to their website) has planned to picket his funeral over his role in Brokeback Mountain.
So Hot 99.5 in Washington, DC decided to interview their leading spokesperson, Shirley Phelps-Roper. You can listen to that interview here.
The interview contains the normal, hateful speech. But, the interviewer stumps Mrs. Roper with a question about her illegitimate son. Apparently, this had been uncovered before, but this was the first I had heard of it. I find it interesting, not that she made a mistake (as we all have and do and will), but that she actually claims her sexual sin is different than other people’s sexual sin. That she actually becomes one of those Calvinists that makes people hate Calvinists. That her mistake should be overlooked and not brought up, while we should claim that God hates others for their mistakes.
Anyway, the interview is interesting, especially when the interviewer offers to pay for her shipment to an island in the Caribbean to be by herself. NOTE: as usual, there is a lot of hateful speech, and some slight language. By the way, maybe The Nick and Josh Podcast can interview her again.
UPDATE: [HT: Courtney--Sorry, I forgot.]

Wow you dug up the archives huh? No, we gave her a two parter and thats about all the air she gets. I am sure it would be a copy of the exact same stuff too.

Ha…I’m sure it would be virtually identical to every interview she gives. I just thought I’d give you guys some props for putting up with her, although Josh getting frustrated with her is probably my favorite moment from any podcast. Although, your podcast and this interview are about the only times I’ve heard one of them on their heels (the video at the end of this too, but it’s a little different….).

Dang bro….I didn’t mean to conjure up such negative feelings….
I don’t blame you, though. I don’t know how you guys were able to put up with her as well as you did. My soul shudders at the thought of signs like “thank god for dead soldiers.”

My wife grew up in Topeka and went to school with some of the Phelps’ kids. Their own family picketed their own kids’ graduation!

Those people really frustrate me….its not like the Bible teaches Grace or anything like that…

They don’t care what the Bible says. If you aren’t a member of their church, then you are gay and God hates you. Very, very sad.
And perhaps the saddest part is that they get more press for their craziness than other churches that are being faithful and true to God’s Word.

Sterling,
That is insane that they actually picketed their own kids’ graduation. It defies all logic that they sent their kids to the school and then picketed the school. And you’re absolutely right, they only care whether you are part of their church. Fred is some sort of demigod for them, and allegiance to him and mimicking his warped beliefs is the only way to “salvation.”
Allen,
The only good thing is that most people, I think, realize that they are overboard nutcases. They don’t actually associate these people with any form of legitimate religion. I just hope this little realization about her sexual sins will start to tame them a little.

Allen,
I’ll have to listen to it later at home. I’m at work & can’t download.
Well, we Baptist are good at fighting but the Phelps are insane. Kind of reminds of a line from a DC Talk song. “The greatest condemnation against Christianity is Christians.
